Our goal is to provide the best sports fields possible.

Unstaffed Field Conditions

Fields can be closed due to unsafe playing surfaces and to prevent severe turf damage.

Inclement Weather Guidelines

To keep fields safe, open, and meet the standard for high quality fields, the City has set guidelines for inclement weather and team sports playing on wet fields.

When possible some exceptions could include, closing a limited number of fields (Premier fields, which is due to the heavy demand/use they receive) or user discretion when feasible.

Turf Damage

Turf damage to fields occurs when overused or used during inclement weather. Prolonged rain or heavy downpours with field use will cause irreparable damage to the turf. This happens in early spring and late fall and includes snowfall and removal of snow for football games and practices.

Warm weather in the spring may result in fields being free of snow and appear playable. However, they're not officially open but may be used casually by users assuming all liability.

Inclement Weather Process

To keep damage to a minimum and ensure play safe conditions, fields may be closed during inclement weather. This reduces repair costs and the potential for the field to be out of service for extended lengths of time.

Staffed Facility field bookings will be consolidated to one or two venues in the late fall to limit the damage and allow fields to be ready for spring season play the following year.

Once an assessment has been made the City makes a decision to open or close the fields. The Sports Fields Facility Notifications is updated and information is provided to 311.

Snow Removal Guidelines

In order to accommodate our customers on game days when it snows, and for requests to allow practices, the following fall snow removal guidelines will be used.

  • The City will consolidate any or all bookings in the fall to one or two venues as needed
  • Snow removal from natural turf fields only by discretion of the Sports Fields Team
  • This maintenance strategy is implemented to prevent the number of fields that need lengthy repair time and the associated costs of the repair in the spring
  • All “must play” games should be scheduled on the artificial turf surfaces at Johnny Bright Bowl, Clarke Park, Mill Woods, Clareview and Foote Field
  • In the fall, if the ground has not frozen solid, the potential to cause irreparable damage during snow removal is much greater
  • We will assess the field(s) to determine the best time to consider snow removal
  • We acknowledge the fact that there will always be some potential safety concerns due to snow and ice
  • This is why play is not recommended and we strongly encourage groups to schedule all fall games on the all weather surface at Johnny Bright Bowl, Clarke Park or Foote Field.
  • All snow removal costs will be shared by all the groups that benefit from the removal at our Athletic Facilities
  • Bleachers may be cleaned in the centre section only (about 300 spectators). If the bleachers are cleaned the users benefiting from this snow cleaning will share in the cost to do this work.
  • Department snow removal equipment may be dedicated to other activities at this time. Private groups or individuals are not allowed to remove snow on sports fields.
  • If damage to natural turf occurs as a result of user play, the user will be held accountable for all repair costs and may also have their booking privileges revoked
  • Parks staff will revisit these guidelines as required

Maintenance of Sports Fields

The City follows specific procedures in the proper maintenance of our sports fields.

Rectangular Fields

Playing Surface
  • Remove diseased/damaged turf
  • Fill, level and reseed/sod
  • Fill in and level depressions with soil top dress and overseed
  • Fertilize, water and aerate
Goal Posts
  • Check bases and weld joints for cracks and excessive rust/wear
  • Check concrete/secure footings
  • Ensure all tops of vertical poles are capped
  • Refurbish/replace goal posts that cannot be repaired
  • If poles are to be refurbished, strip tape and remove rust and loose paint
  • Prime/paint as required and use a quick drying paint
  • Drill a 1cm hole at base of upright poles for water drainage


Infield Area
  • Loosen shale and silt with appropriate tools to a depth of 5cm
  • Rake and float skinned areas with a steel mat leaving a slight crown for water drainage
  • Compact soft areas by rolling and tamping
  • Fill any depressions on skinned areas with shale/silt
  • Vary floating patterns to avoid lipping
  • Keep bases level and aligned with the dimensions of the diamond
Home Plate Area
  • Fill with shale/silt to provide a workable yet firm footing that is not too loose
  • Level it with the top of home plate to prevent water pooling and provide proper drainage
Base Paths
  • Should be straight, following 90 degree angles from home plate point towards first and third bases
  • Edge the base paths to keep grass from encroaching defined areas as required
  • Grade as required so there is no rutted or dished appearance
  • Fill any depressions with shale/silt
  • Mow to a height of 5cm
  • Top dress with topsoil and overseed depressions as required
  • Ensure area is free of holes and structurally sound
  • Ensure area is free of any other hazards
  • Repair backstops as required
  • Drill a 1cm at the base of upright poles for water drainage and to stop frost heaving
  • Install bottom rail 30-45cm above ground along bottom edge of structure to prevent mesh warping
Bleachers and Benches
  • Sand or rasp all surfaces to remove graffiti and prevent slivers/splinters
  • Replace broken wooden boards/components
  • Eliminate any protruding object
  • Adjust and tighten/replace as required: nuts, bolts, screws, couplings
  • Paint as necessary
  • Recommended shale size is 5/16" crushed, often labelled as "ball diamond"
  • Reclaim material from surrounding area
  • Remove lipping
  • Define and edge as per standard dimensions
  • Add shale to get correct grade
  • Rake and level area
  • Ensure area is clean and free of debris
  • Use baseball standard silt or use a mixture of 50% silt and 50% playground sand
  • Reclaim material from surrounding area
  • Remove lipping
  • Define and edge as per standard dimensions
  • Add silt/sand to get correct grade
  • Rake any excess silt/sand and level area
  • Ensure area is clean and free of debris


Pitch Area
  • Water, roll and pack leaving slight crown for drainage
  • Surface to be kept compact and hard
  • Add material to bring to standard
  • Lightly rake for playing
Field of Play
  • Surface to be kept clean/free of debris, obstructions and protrusions
  • Remove diseased/damaged turf
  • Fill, level and reseed/sod
  • Field of play determined by available space


Spring Start Up
  • Clean, sweep and wash surface area
  • Check posts and mesh
  • Check turnbuckles
  • Check condition of nets and cable supports
  • Replace/repair as necessary
  • Adjust to proper height for play
  • Check timer and lights
Summer Maintenance
  • Check courts on a weekly basis
  • Check nets/posts
  • Clean/sweep up debris
  • Make repairs as necessary
  • Check for vandalism
End of Season
  • Make sure timers for light are shut off
  • Remove/repair, fold and store tennis nets
  • Remove turnbuckles
  • Inspect chain link fence, fixtures and playing surface
  • Make repairs where possible

Track and Field

Pole Vault

Portable pits are recommended for high jump and pole vault.

Long Jump Pit
  • Pit Dimensions: 8m x 3m x 0.3m deep
  • Define edges
  • Remove lipping
  • Level to grade
  • Sand to be clean and free of debris
  • Ensure takeoff boards are in place and secure (track venues only)
  • Replace takeoff boards if worn/splintered (track venues only)
  • Maintain proper drainage/compaction
Jump Pit Material
  • Use "washed playground sand"
  • Sand to be clean and free of debris
  • Reclaim material from surround area
  • Rototill as required
  • Rake sand level with perimeter
  • Add sand as required
  • Define and edge pit
  • Dimensions for runways are 1.2m wide and a minimum of 37.5m long
¼ Mile Track Material
  • Recommended shale size is 5/16" crushed, often labelled as "ball diamond"

Sports Field Marking Program

This service is provided by the City for the marking of Sports Fields in accordance with the Joint Use Field Strategy.

Park Staff Responsibilities
  • Parks staff begin the rectangular field-marking program on May 1st each year (weather depending) 
  • Staff only mark booked premier fields, approved tournaments (by request) and fields located on district level parks (by request)
  • If your request doesn't meet these requirements then you may participate in the loan out program to mark your own request
Marking Requests
  • Minimum 2 weeks notice - lists and requests for marking must be submitted 10 business days prior to the event
  • Completed in the order received with the funding available
  • Marking paint available to various community organizations for their booked soccer programs and to private citizens through the 'Loan Out Program'

Request Line Marking

¼ Mile Track Markings

Parks staff may mark (paint only) tracks on schoolyard turf at the cost to do the work, providing that the marking causes no overlap confusion with other sports field markings and resources are available to do the work. Arrangements to mark existing ¼ mile shale tracks will be considered by request only.

Requests must be made at least 10 school days prior to the event.

Line Marker Workshop

Groups wishing to borrow air pressurized line markers must first attend the field-lining workshop.

Call 311 to register for the Line Marker Workshop.

Loan Out Program - Parks Line Markers
  • Must be requested 10 business days prior to your booking
  • Marking machines along with athletic field marking paint (pre mixed) will be available for loan to users
  • The number of fields being marked by the group and the district will determine the amount of paint given out
  • When cleaning the marking machine, remember the environment and be considerate of others
  • Use of any chemicals is strictly prohibited by provincial legislation and subject to penalty
  • No vehicles are allowed on any playing field or turf area at any time

Marking Tips

Dry Line Marking Tips
  • Use athletic field marking CHALK
  • Run a string line between two stakes for line designation
  • Pour chalk into line marker to about the halfway mark
  • Line up marker on string line, open lever to release chalk, and push marker along line. When done shut off lever.
  • If chalk clogs machine just loosen it up by stirring the chalk in the machine
  • Do not wash marker
  • Keep machine dry at all times
Curved Lines

This requires 2 people

Person #1
  • Measure/locate and pin center point
  • Run string from center pin to length of radius
  • Tie in a pin on string at correct length
  • Keep line taut at all times and do arc by walking with the string
Person #2
  • Follow person #1 where they are holding the tape/string with marker
  • With tight curves, you may want to lift the back wheels off the ground slightly
Wet Line Marking Tips
Filling Marker
  • Make sure the air tank off
  • Bleed line on paint tank
  • Open the paint tank
  • Put the funnel (with screen) on top paint tank
  • Agitate mixed paint by stirring it for about 30 seconds
  • Pour mixed paint from bucket into paint tank on marker. It is important to use funnel with screen whenever filling tank. This will prevent particles and debris from getting into the tank that could plug clogging the tank.
  • Fill tank within 8 cm (3 inches) of top
  • Secure lid on paint tank
  • Turn on air cylinder (about a ¼ turn)
  • Check for air leaks
  • Pressure is preset to 40 PSI (275 KPa). Do not adjust regulator to a higher setting.
Marking Procedures
  • Measure field and place markers at the 4 corners of the perimeter
  • Start at one goal line and then other sideline
  • Stretch string from peg to peg. Make sure that the string is taut so that there is little movement.
  • Go about half way down the line, lift it straight up about 25-50cm (1-2 feet) and let go. It will snap back straight.
  • Paint line with machine
  • Always look about 5m ahead of the paint box
Trouble Shooting
  • If air is leaking from paint tank: shut off air, open lid, turn it around, reseal it, and recharge the system
  • If paint won't come out:
    • Shut off air, bleed the line of the paint tank
    • Remove nozzle from spray box and rinse with water
    • Make sure the funnel has a screen when filling the machine. Also, if the machine is sitting for a time, rinse off nozzle before starting.
    • If the problem persists, it may be due to the paint not being stirred before putting it in the machine (paint settles after a short period of time, leaving the water on top and the thick paint on the bottom).
Cleaning Marker
  • Make sure machine is completely empty
  • Fill paint container half full of water. Pressure up machine and spray water out until empty. This will clean out the line to the nozzle. Repeat if still dirty.
  • Measure and mark perimeter
  • Measure and mark one goal crease and penalty crease
  • Measure and mark centre line and centre circle
  • Measure and mark other goal crease and penalty crease
  • Measure and mark perimeter including end zones
  • Measure and mark yard lines (5 yard increments), starting at one goal line
  • Measure and mark hash lines
  • Measure and mark foul lines
  • Measure and mark batter box, safety lines


Depending on the amount of natural rainfall Premier Sports Fields receive, they are given supplementary irrigation to provide 1” of moisture per week.

Turf Grass

Turf grass is judged by its playability, density, ability to withstand pests and diseases and its uniformity of growth and colour. 

The following six practices are central in growing healthy turf. Every year these practices should be executed and re-evaluated to ensure they provide the best possible quality turf.

(Verti-Drain and core aeration) corrects soil compaction from increased use and traffic.

Is done after determining the nutrient requirements of the turf, which depends on the type, soil, drainage, and intensity of use.

Is one of the most important parts of growing good turf. Proper watering helps develop deep roots and stronger turf.

Weed Control
Is best done by growing good turf through aeration and irrigation. Herbicides are used only when needed.

Dandelion Control

Top Dressing/Overseeding
Helps restore normal turf conditions after damage.

(5 cm in height, 10 - 12 times a year) and maintaining a height of cut compatible with the growth characteristics of a given turf grass is important.
