- LRT: These routes will provide frequent service at all times. Local bus connections will integrate with LRT stations.
- Frequent Bus Routes: These routes will run on major corridors in the inner neighbourhoods. They will operate 7 days a week. They will run every 15 minutes or better on weekdays and Saturdays, and every 20 minutes or better during late nights and Sundays.
- Rapid Bus Routes: These routes will connect areas where there is no LRT to major destinations. They will provide fast, non-stop or limited stop service between neighbourhoods and major destinations like downtown, the U of A and shopping centres.
- Crosstown Routes: These routes will connect major destinations in the outer areas of the city without having to go through downtown or travel on neighbourhood roads. They will operate when there is sufficient demand and will run every 20 to 30 minutes.
- Local Routes: These routes will be more direct and easier to understand than the current routes. They will provide connections to LRT, Frequent Bus Routes and local activity centres. They will operate on days of the week and times when there is sufficient demand. The new bus network will continue to provide local routes in neighbourhoods, but walking distances to bus stops might be farther.
- Community Routes: These routes operate during the midday and connect local neighbourhood destinations, such as shopping centres, medical facilities and large seniors' residences. These routes make use of the smaller buses and come less often than regular routes.
In response to the guiding principles in the Transit Strategy, the new Bus Network has a number of different route types that will help meet the various types of travel needs throughout the city.
In spring 2018, our transit planners carefully reviewed public feedback and made a number of changes to the proposed bus network. They are currently reviewing fall 2018 public feedback and may make minor changes where warranted before the final draft is presented to City Council for final approval. The final draft of the proposed network will be posted here in early spring 2019.
