About the Project

Renewal of Jasper Place Fitness and Leisure Centre is currently underway to replace and update aging infrastructure. This rehabilitation and renewal project was an identified priority as part of the City’s asset management of valued community buildings.

When the facility reopens to the public, members and visitors can expect to see:

  • A new family change room in place of the old fitness centre
  • A new, accessible front service counter in the lobby
  • Refinished pool basin and deck
  • A new barrier-free washroom in the lobby
  • New windows
  • Refreshed male and female change rooms
  • A new accessible and inclusive change room designed for all genders and families
  • Additional parking in front of the building

Some of the ‘back-of-house’ work people will not see at first glance includes:

  • Roof and structural repairs
  • A new drainage system
  • Asbestos removal throughout the building structure
  • Updated mechanical and electrical systems

The project timeline for rehabilitation and renewal of the Jasper Place facility was extended due to more asbestos than anticipated and unforeseen complications with removal. Oftentimes with older buildings, the full extent of work is not uncovered until there is an investigation deep into the building structure. This work cannot occur while the building is occupied and in full operation. Construction crews are working safely and quickly to complete this project and reopen the facility to the community.

Project Overview

In 2005, a feasibility study was completed to explore the redevelopment of Jasper Place Fitness and Leisure Centre into a multi-purpose facility. The study was updated in 2011 and the project was split into two phases.

City Council approved funding for phase I in the 2015-2018 capital budget. The first phase of the project will address building lifecycle management and renewal of the fitness and leisure centre. This work involves replacement of the pool deck drainage system, windows, ceiling in the natatorium, structural repairs, waterproofing repairs, retrofit to the aquatic changerooms and development of the family change rooms as identified in the feasibility study. The fitness centre will be moved to St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre.
