Adopted in 2017, the Sustainable Building Policy sets an ambitious standard of sustainable building practices for buildings the City of Edmonton owns, leases and funds. The City commits to reducing the carbon emissions of its buildings in support of the ultimate goal of a carbon neutral Edmonton. The practices of the policy have the simultaneous benefits of reducing overall expenditures, reducing the City’s exposure to the price volatility of fossil fuels, and creating economic opportunities for Edmonton-based businesses. Through the implementation of the policy, sustainable best practices can be advanced city-wide.

The policy addresses 6 categories of affected buildings:

  1. The design and construction of new City-owned buildings;
  2. Existing City-owned buildings;
  3. The City acquisition of existing buildings;
  4. City-owned buildings leased to others;
  5. City-leased buildings; and
  6. City funded non-owned buildings.

The policy also provides that exempt buildings should meet the intent of C532.
