Sometimes called ‘the other 9-5’, the nighttime economy is an important part of Edmonton’s local communities and businesses.

Restaurants, bars, music venues and other entertainment businesses are all examples of businesses that are part of ‘the other 9-5’. These businesses provide places to go, things to do, and help animate commercial areas and streets at night. They also attract residents and visitors, and like their daytime counterparts, help to make Edmonton and its neighbourhoods engaging places to live and visit.

Connecting and Educating New Businesses

As part of the City of Edmonton’s Open Window program, expertise is available to support late night venues. This service connects new businesses with one-on-one support to understand how to navigate the business licensing and permitting process, and provides information on other regulatory and policy agencies, as well as specific considerations required for minors prohibited and hospitality related businesses.

Partnering with Industry

The City works closely with industry members, including the Edmonton Police Service, bar owners and operators of other venues where minors are prohibited, through a regular industry roundtable and ongoing collaboration. If you are an existing business interested in participating in the industry roundtable, contact the Program Manager.

Best Bar None

Best Bar None is a voluntary program for nightlife venues designed to keep staff and patrons safe and celebrate excellence in the industry. Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton set the standards for Best Bar None to ensure businesses are held to the highest levels of safety and quality. Edmonton businesses can apply online for accreditation through the Best Bar None Application for Edmonton form.
